Silverware Museum, Florence
Also known as the “Medici Treasure”, the Silverware Museum is located in the north wing of Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
On the ground floor are the oldest works from the private collections of Lorenzo the Magnificent: the exhibits include ancient Roman and Venetian vases, a Byzantine chalice and a double cup in amethyst.
The other halls contain precious frescoes, ebony artefacts inlaid with semi-precious stones and turned ivory vases. There are also rare examples of Dutch cabinetry, vases and cups in rock crystal and a Russian magnetic compass that belonged to Tsar Peter the Great.
The collection of more than one thousand oriental porcelainware items is worthy of particular mention.
Various silverware items, brooches, earrings and exotic artefacts are on display in the mezzanine.
