Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, Florence
The Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, one of the oldest perfumeries in the world, is located in a 13th century former Dominican convent in the very heart of Florence.
The business was founded in 1612 by order of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, and in the 18th century its products were exported to the East Indies and China.
The apothecary business was handed down over the centuries and remains ongoing within the perfumery, which is the only one of its kind in the world.
All the interiors retain the historic features of the various epochs in their furnishings, frescoes and in the objects displayed.
Here you can find essences and perfumes, such as the original Eau de Cologne Water, a number of hair and beauty products, including Almond Paste, and cleansing lotions, tonics and moisturisers.
Soaps are moulded one by one using 19th century machinery and are wrapped by hand.
Some of the liqueurs produced include the renowned Alkermes and a number of elixirs, and of course a myriad teas and herbal teas made from medicinal plants cultivated in the inside garden.
A unique place that is truly worth a visit.
