The fumaroles of Lardarello and the Geothermal Museum, Punta Ala

Larderello is a hamlet of Pomarance, in the province of Pisa which is in the centre of the so called Valley of the Devil, in the area of the Metalliferous Hills.

The zone is called the Valley of the Devil for its characteristic landscape rich in boraciferous fumaroles with their typical columns of white vapours which inspired Dante Alighieri’s Inferno.

Together with the fumaroles, this evocative landscape includes remarkable rumbles created by the violent discharge of vapours from the subsoil, the large lakes and the characteristic sulphurous odour.

Larderello also hosts the Geothermal Museum which illustrates, in a comprehensive and didactical way, the different procedures to extract geothermal energy.

Thanks to the presence of these natural phenomenon, this area produces 10% of the global geothermal energy.
