The Festival d'Aix-en-Provence

05/07/2012 - 27/07/2012

Founded in 1948, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence is undoubtedly one of the most important events in the region. All through July the festival attracts the best of classical and lyrical music, with concerts hosted in the historical buildings of the city.

The guest of honor of this year’s edition is the English composer George Benjamin, who will perform his opera Written on skin, personally conducting the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.

The festival will also feature a tribute to Mozart, with the operas The Marriage of Figaro and The Fake Lady Gardener, both orchestrated by Le Cercle de l'Homme (the Circle of Man) and respectively conducted by Jérémie Rhorer and Andreas Spering.

The London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, will perform at the Grand Théâtre de Provence (Grand Theater of Provence), with musical renditions of works by Ravel, Prokoviev, and Stravinsky, while the Choir Les Arts Florissants (The Blooming Arts) will perform a few excerpts from the opera David et Jonathas by Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
