Al Bottegon in Venice
It’s called Al Bottegon, but the large sign says “Cantine del Vino già Schiavi”. Nonetheless, it is not difficult to find this place in Venice, a sort of wine shop that serves wine by the glass and where a large selection of bottles of wine and liqueurs can be purchased or where a glass of wine can be sipped at the bar while nibbling on the enticing selection of cicchetti (appetizers) that are served every day.
This Venetian family-run business is frequented by university tutors and professors from the nearby Department of Philosophy and by Venetians who are all too aware of the owner’s culinary expertise, who just a few years ago even won a worldwide finger food competition for his unparalleled crostini.
Along with the classic Venetian cicchetti, which include marinated salt-cod crostini, meatballs, hard-boiled eggs with anchovies, the display counter boasts surprising combinations such as tuna and chocolate or gorgonzola and pears with balsamic vinegar.
The wine list includes both Italian and imported wines with probably one of the best quality-price ratios in all Venice.
