L'Osteria di Santa Marina, Venice

With two dining rooms and an outdoor garden, the Osteria di Santa Marina (Santa Marina Tavern) in Venice serves a varied menu that is primarily fish-based, prepared and cooked in a variety of ways including marinated, smoked, raw and fried fish.

Its specialities include Tuna Bresaola with aromatic herbs, King prawns with country lard, Gnochetti with cuttlefish ink and seafood ragout and Turbot parcel with artichokes and new potatoes.

In spring you can sample a truly unique seasonal dish: Frittura di moeche e castraure.

Moeche are small crabs that change their shell between April and May, during which period they remain soft and easier to eat, while castraure are the first buds of the purple artichokes from the Island of Sant'Erasmo.

The combination of the sweet crabs with the bitter artichokes is sensational. One piece of advice, however: Don’t drink wine with this dish as the flavour would be altered by the artichokes’ high iron content.
