GAM – Galleria d’Arte Moderna

The Gallery of Modern Art is located on the second floor of Palazzo Pitti in the centre of Florence, and hosts a collection of mostly Italian paintings and sculptures, dating from the late eighteenth century to the First World War.

Commenced in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the collection gathers the best works entered in the Academy of Arts and Design competitions. Over time, a number of other acquisitions from city-wide collections were added.

The museum offers a comprehensive overview of Italian painting from the Italian Neo-Classical period through to the twentieth century. It hosts an extraordinary collection of Macchiaioli artists, as well as works from the Italian schools of the late nineteenth century and the artistic movements of the early twentieth century.

Among the works are Samson and The Two Foscari by Francesco Hayez, Pietro Benvenuti’s Napoleon and a vast collection of paintings by artists ranging from Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega and Signorini to Morandi, De Pisis, Malla, Marinetti and Elizabeth Chaplin.

Among the sculptures are neoclassical pieces, such as Antonio Canova’s Calliope and Giovanni Dupré’s Abel, alongside engravings and more modern works, such as the works of Adrian Cecioni, inspired by the Macchiaioli.
