Explore a piece of living history and taste sublime wines on a tour of the Villa Cusona estate.
Touring the age-old Villa Cusona cellars is like opening a time capsule. Established back in AD 994, the Cusona estate roams over 1300 acres amid the green Tuscan hills, near the stupendous medieval town of San Gimignano.
The driving force behind the estate is the Strozzi and Guicciardini families. Their political and economic clout has changed the history of Tuscany, Italy and even Europe. In the 15th century, philosopher and historian Francesco Guicciardini became a prominent political figure and Governor of the Papal States.
The Strozzis were powerful bankers, heads of state and mercenary commanders, although they were exiled from Florence after Cosimo dei Medici’s rise to power. Filippo Strozzi would return in 1466 to build the magnificent Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, although he didn’t live to see it completed. Piero Strozzi was commander of the French army and became Marshal of France in 1554.
During thr 17th century, Guicciardini Strozzi descendants married into the Marlboroughs, the family of Sir Winston Churchill. A particularly illustrious forebear was Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo, aka the Mona Lisa, as immortalised by Leonardo da Vinci. The current family members are the Mona Lisa’s 15th-generation descendants.
You will hear stories aplenty about all this and more on the guided tour which includes a visit to the museum and the cellars. Then it will be time to adjourn to the VIP lounge for a real treat for the taste buds with the chance to sample a superb selection of sophisticated Guicciardini Strozzi wines.
