A delightful family-run restaurant in the centre of Follonica, Il Sottomarino’s menu has plenty of fish, with classic Maremma seafood dishes as well as the owner Filippo’s original interpretations.
The fresh pasta, bread, desserts and liqueurs are all homemade.
The starter menu opens with Carpaccio di Tonno al sale dell’Himalaya (Tuna Carapaccio with Himalayan Salt) or Polpo e farro al pepe rosa (Octopus with spelt and pink pepper), leaving enough room for the Ravioli ripieni alla spigola alla Filippo (Filippo’s Sea Bass Ravioli), the Cream of potatoes, prawns, and rock fish or even the Orecchiette con calamari e Pistacchio di Bronte (Orecchiette with squid and Bronte pistachios).
Entrées include anything from the more traditional Grigliata mista (Grilled fish platter) or Pescatrice in guazzetto con olive e capperi (Monkfish stewed with olives and capers), to oriental inspired dishes such as Tagliata di tonno al sesamo (Tuna strips with sesame seeds) or Fritto misto in tempura con verdure (Mixed fish tempura with vegetables).
There are plenty desserts to choose from but we recommend the Tiramisù with green tea and mint and the Soufflé with 72% dark chocolate.
The wine list covers around 80 different wines, mostly white and chiefly Tuscan and Italian, though there are some imports and French champagnes.
